90s Themed Graffiti Birthday Party
Anyone born in the 90s would agree that it was off the chain. Between the clash between boy bands and grunge to some insanely awesome TV and movies, it’s safe to say that the last decade of the 20th century was pretty epic.
Our amazing friend, Lisa from Modern Party Company, was recently asked to plan a 90s graffiti-themed tenth birthday party for twin girls, Parker and Jolie. The party that Lisa and the girls’ mom, Amber, put together included all of the best things from the 90s, including bright neon colors, graffiti, boom boxes (with 90s music on CD!), and so much more.

Parker and Jolie’s party was held at Blanco. The awesome thing about Blanco is, as its name suggests, it’s an all-white studio that can be rented out for photo or video shoots and events. For Lisa, that meant she had an entirely blank slate to work her magic on.
To start, Lisa enlisted the help of Glo Party and Co to create a 20 by 16-foot backdrop that, in our opinion, was totally INSANE in the best way possible! This backdrop started with a hot pink wall to cover the left side of the venue that included stair shelves coming down one end and a built-in candy shop on the other. The rest of the backdrop that spanned the main focal wall was made up of several panels, each decorated in different themes showing off different fun 90s designs. Our faves were definitely the Fresh Princess and Clueless-themed panels!
Meanwhile, the rest of the venue was decked out with a full graffiti backdrop where the DJ station (decorated as a boom box, of course!), drink and cocktail station by Allure & Alchemy, and custom airbrushing station were set up.
Of course, no birthday party is complete without balloons! The guys and gals at Balloon Therapy created an extreme balloon display that went across the top of the entire backdrop, part of the ceiling, and finished with a full balloon wall. The balloons were an out-of-this-world mix of all of the party theme colors in blue, pink, and purple, with a few bright splashes of orange. Some fringe curtains in purple, blue, and heather pink were added toward the corner of the display to amp up the area extending over the ceiling. To make the display really pop, they included a few specialty balloons in Furby shapes, old-school mobile phones, smiley faces, boom boxes, and disco balls, along with mylar star burst balloons to match the rest of the garland. If you look closely enough, you’ll even see a couple of small inflatable couches that they hung up there. How freaking sweet is that?!
There were tons of things to munch on during this party, starting with the display steps decorated with nostalgic toys like lava lamps, Slinkys, Pogs, Tomogachis, Trolls, TY Beanie Babies, and even a working View-Master. However, the real fun here was the custom cookies from Sweet Therapy by Valerie displayed on our Purple and Mint Green Melamine Cake Stands. The cookies were decorated to look like cassette tapes, high-top sneakers, Furbys, the classic MTV logo, and roller skates – aka all of the best things from the 90s. Our favorite, though, was the Now That’s What I Call 10 CD cookies that were a shout-out to the girls’ tenth birthday.
The same wall also featured Parker & Jolie’s Totally Rad Candy Shop. When Glo Party Co. drew up the plans for this epic display, they included small cubbies along the top and shelves. The cubbies were filled with Trolls and Furbys while the shelves were fully lined with boxes of candy to fill every nostalgic sweet tooth craving. These were the perfect treats to snack on between trips to the huge charcuterie board by B&B Boards Cheese.
In between dancing and partying, the girls and their guests had the best seats in the house at the tables Lisa set up for them to eat on. Vibrant, cushy pillows surrounded four small white tables. Taylor from Something Pretty Floral created centerpieces to go on each table. The flowers she chose were a mix of bright pinks and purples with accents of pale yellows and a few feathers, butterflies, and stars for whimsy. After setting the centerpieces on the tables, Lisa added shiny CDs on each side and a hefty sprinkling of a custom confetti mix by Lauren Glass. If you don’t want to create a custom mix for your own party, we carry a few of Lauren’s confetti mixes in our shop, including the Magic Butterflies Confetti that would look great on these tables.
For the table settings, Lisa turned to some of our faves, and we honestly can’t get enough of how amazing the final look turned out! To stick to the color scheme, she started by alternating between our Chewing Gum Pink and Sky Blue Paper Plates and topped each one with a black and white dessert plate. Our Black and White Chip Small Paper Party Plates would work great here. Each setting had one of our Lightning Bolt Napkins with either a pink or blue fork and a dinner napkin beside the plates. Finally, Lisa’s tables were completed with our Disco Ball Drink Tumblers in Silver and Hot Pink and a slap bracelet - both of which Jolie and Parker’s friends could take home at the end of the party.
Although everyone had a great time dancing to everything from MC Hammer to NSYNC, playing classic arcade games, and jumping on a bounce house outside, in case anyone needed a place to just sit and relax, Lisa created a little hang-out nook with hot pink couches and plush chairs from Shag Carpet Props. A full disco ball backdrop was set up behind the seating area while a small white table sat in the middle. But really, how cute are these centerpieces?! The shiny white roller skates instead of normal vases or flower boxes were such a fun idea! More confetti, CDs, and a few Party Disco Balls added even more glitter to the table, and we love the guest appearance of Alf sitting all cozy on the couch, waiting for someone to join him.
When it finally came time to cut the cake, the girls stood behind a huge cake that was almost as tall as they were! Jenny Layne Bakery created a totally epic cake for the twins. The bottom tier was decorated in airbrushed graffiti designs, and sitting on top was the coolest boombox ever! The details were spot on, even down to the buttons and oversized handle. Parker and Jolie made their birthday wishes on ten of our Pastel Swirly Candles and celebrated finally hitting double digits!
Every detail in this 90s graffiti party was so perfectly spot on! It’s definitely one that the twins and all of their friends will be talking about for years to come!
