7 & Rad 90s Theme Birthday Party
Was there ever a decade as “da bomb” as the 90s? As if! From the crazy mix of grunge and boy bands to butterfly clips, colorful tie dye, and denim, the 90s had it all! Every pre-Y2K child has fond memories of growing up in the 90s, so why not bring back all of the nostalgia in a 90s theme party? Our friend at Keep It Colorful Co. did exactly that with a 90s themed 7 & Rad birthday party.
Roxanne is the owner and founder of Keep It Colorful Co., a party and event planning company, as well as a successful family photographer. She collaborated with many amazing vendors to create this awesome styled shoot celebrating all things 90s.
90s Theme Birthday Party Supplies
To get started, Roxanne wanted to bring in all of the colorful fun that the 90s had to offer. Starting with invitations from Paperie Off Park featuring bright neon colors and nostalgic 90s symbols and an adorable knitted neon “Oh Snap” sign from Stitch + Steel Co., Roxanne put together a color scheme for her party. Bright neons mixed with soft pastels and accented with glittery gold ran rampant throughout the whole party theme.
To set the scene for her party, Roxanne partnered with Little Legged Affairs. She used their iridescent disco wall as the main backdrop for her party. The wall was so shimmery and glittered with every passing breeze. It was just perfect for her party theme. To get a similar look for your own party, try our Silver Fringe Curtain Backdrop. It’s just as glittery as a disco wall and catches the breeze just as well.
In addition to the disco wall, she used Little Legged Affair’s pastel rainbow standee because what 90s girl didn’t draw rainbows or have rainbow stickers all over her notebooks? Finally, Roxanne finished off the room with plenty of balloons. A balloon garland of fuchsia, ivory, lilac and green hung above the rainbow standee while mylar balloons spelling out “7 & Rad” hung on the disco wall and a bright yellow lightning bolt balloon hung on the snack cart. To create a similar look, you can use our Jumbo Number Balloons in Pink as well as balloons from our latex balloon collection to create your own garland.
We love how Roxanne set up her party table for her 7 & Rad 90s theme party. With more party rentals from Little Legged affairs, she chose clear white plastic chairs and a plain white wooden table for her seating area. Together they made the perfect canvas for all of the pops of color Roxanne added to make her table really fun. On the chair hung either berets bright enough to make Lizzie Macguire jealous or fun 90s nostalgia bags shaped like an original Game Boy Color and a rotary phone (with a working handheld headset!) from Bewaltz Gifts & Accessories. For the table itself, Roxanne had a floral centerpiece filled with bright flowers in all of the colors of her party theme.
Roxanne’s place settings were just as colorful as the rest of her party decor. To re-create a similar look, pair our Small Sky Blue Paper Plates stacked on top of our Large Chartreuse Paper Plates for fun pops of neon on the table. Of course, she had to include dessert plates in her tablescape, so Roxanne added Neon Heart Plates to go with each place setting. Besides the plates sat Blush Smiley Face Cups, Black and White Grid Napkins, and forks from our White and Blush Cutlery Set. Every place setting was finalized with custom acrylic drink stirrers in 90s symbols, acrylic cutouts of either a boombox or lightning bolt, and each child’s name, all from Design & Unwind. If you’re a little strapped for time in your own party planning or can’t find custom acrylics, our Lightning Bolt Napkins are just retro enough to be included on this fabulous 90s table.
A party is not a party without snacks, and Roxanne put together the perfect snack tray for her 90s party. Of course, charcuterie boards are all the rage right now, but Roxanne had to get a little creative for a 7 & Rad 90s party. She made heart-shaped PB&Js and cucumber tea sandwiches and filled the rest of the board with yummy fruits and veggies. All of her cheeses were cut into either hearts or stars, and she incorporated her fun party colors by adding Gushers and gummy flowers for a touch of sweet fun.
We are absolutely in love with what Roxanne put together for her desserts. Her delicious treats were arranged on a white tea cart that matched her white table. In the corner, she had a small vase of colorful flowers, but the rest of the table was filled with treats. Instead of trays to hold all of her desserts, Roxanne used a purple makeup brush holder and a purple Caboodle. Instead of makeup brushes, Roxanne filled the holder with colorful lollipops, pretzel sticks dipped in white chocolate and sprinkles, and rainbow cotton candy push pops from Floof Cotton Candy. To finish off her dessert cart, Roxanne added the pink lip phone that almost every 90s girl wanted in her bedroom.
Floof Cotton Candy also made Roxanne’s cake for her party. The rainbow colors fit in perfectly with her party theme, and it was such a fun switch from a regular birthday cake. Although Roxanne’s cake sat on a white scalloped cake stand, our Vanilla Cream Wave Cake Stand would be another great choice. When it came time to serve the cake, Roxanne added some sprinkles to the top along with an acrylic cutout of a pink boombox. Our Dip Dyed Sprinkles would be the perfect addition to this cake, along with our Gold Glitter Dipped Candles to make birthday wishes on.
Every party needs an activity, and Roxanne came up with one that was perfect for her 7 & Rad 90s party. Denim jackets were the height of cool 90s fashion, and if you had a denim jacket, you absolutely had to cover it with patches that showed off your personality. Roxanne held a mini jacket decorating activity. She got each girl an oversized jacket and let them decorate it with a variety of different patches, including varsity letters, hearts, rainbows, stars, and lightning. To get you started on your own patch collection, start with our Sky Pals Iron-On Patches! They’re colorful and perfect for a bit of 90s style.
To complete her 7 & Rad party, Roxanne put together the perfect little party favor boxes. She used small pastel plastic baskets, added some tissue paper padding, and filled them with 90s nostalgia goodies. A gel pen, a colorful mini notebook, and a roll of neon and rainbow stickers by Lisa Frank were uber popular with middle schoolers in the 90s.
Are you a child of the 90s? Whether you’re a 90s child wanting to travel back in time for a day or introduce a little nostalgia to your own children, a 90s birthday party is definitely a fun way to go, no matter your age. We absolutely love how Roxanne incorporated all things 90s into her 7 & Rad birthday theme, and we hope you did too!
